Winter  / Spring 1916

Architectural renderings for a new Chapter House at 918 Blake are drafted. The exterior of the house is classical Georgian architecture which reflects Kappa Sigma’s Southern Heritage.

“A building fund campaign was initiated in 1915, and by January 1916 the men had accumulated $12,000 at which point they hired an architect.  In its Chapter literature, the Gamma Theta chapter attributes the architectural design of its residence to well known architect Kirtland K. Cutter.  An undated Cutter drawing labeled “fraternity house—Moscow, Idaho” may represent an early version of the Kappa Sigma house.  There is no evidence that Cutter designed the actual residence the chapter built in 1916; however, some similarities exist between Cutter’s drawings and the Kappa Sigma House.”

Excerpt from 1996 US Department of Interior, National Register of Historic Places, Kappa Sigma Fraternity House Section # 8 Page 3.  Research note from L. Parisot: The 1977 Gamma Theta Education pamphlet identifies Spokane architect Kirtland Cutter as the primary architect of 918 Blake.  A 1998 biography, “Kirtland Cutter: Architect in the Land of Promise”, references a “Fraternity House” drawing in Moscow that was never built.  The drawings included in the 2005 Gamma Theta Centennial Anthology CD appear to be signed by Spokane architect EJ Baum who was a contemporary Kirtland Cutter.

1918

918 Blake is used as a military barracks during World War I.

“During the first world war, all the fraternities there (in Moscow) were shut down. The doors were closed. And so my father and his company were in the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, and that’s where they put the servicemen. The interesting thing to me is that they turned all the fraternity houses into barracks—all of them as far as I know.” He served for only about three months, and plans were that he be shipped out to South Carolina for artillery training when the war ended.  But that didn’t happen.  “So they discharged him—or mustered him out” Elwood said.  “The armistice was signed in November of 1918, and so by December he had been discharged.  He was in the army all right, but just didn’t spend much time there.”

Elwood V. Werry of Sandpoint, ID comments on the passing of his father, Elwood Roberts Werry, quoted in the 8/25/2003 issue of The Coeur d’Alene Press.

“By 1958, almost 60 people were living in the house, and as the house was designed for only 32 people, remodeling was required to accommodate the growing membership.  The architect for this project was Paul Blanton, an alumnus from the chapter.  At a cost of $82,000, the second and third floors were modified to the present arrangement of 2 and 3 man rooms, increasing the house capacity to 60 people.  Also, the dining room and chapter room were combined into a single, larger dining room.”
